The Swordsman of Mars The Argosy Library eBook Otis Adelbert Kline Robert A Graef

This novel is one of the five planetary romances written by Kline in the 1930s. Kline is probably more famous for these five than for any other twenty or so works that I'm aware of. His other works are have been out of print for the most part since their first publication. The five planetary romances have been available continuously since the early 60s when Avalon Books printed four of them They all use the tropes established by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Martian Series and clearly were strongly imitative of Burroughs' work. Two of the five take place on Mars and they are my personal favorites; the other three take place on Venus and there are many fans of both Burroughs and Kline that favor Kline's Venus series over Burroughs'. I happen to be one of those, but tastes differ. Either way, if you are looking for a good fun read then this book and all the other four planetary romances by Kline are for you. If you are an Burroughs fan, but have never encountered Kline then you are in for a pleasant surprise. Have fun!

The Swordsman of Mars The Argosy Library eBook Otis Adelbert Kline Robert A Graef Reviews

Kaor. I have to admit that O.A.K.'s "Swordsman of Mars" is almost as compelling as any one of Burroughs' Martian tales! E.R.B. is the Master, but O.A.K. is a very close second. If you like John Carter and his adventures on Barsoom, you will probably enjoy Harry Thorne. I'm a huge Burroughs fan and I enjoyed this book! Thank you "Planet Stories" for ressurecting Otis Adelbert Kline!
I first read this novel when I was ten (found it on my grandfather's book shelf and stole it from him), and must have read it about a dozen times. When the movie "John Carter" was first promoted, I thought it was this story, but the movie is actually from Edgar Rice Burroughs' "A Princess of Mars" (which I've also read). Amazing how close these two stories are (published twenty years apart) without anyone claiming plagiarism. Although "The Swordsman of Mars" is outdated by today's sci-fi hits like "Star Trek" and "Ender's Game", it is still a good read, offering a rich world of imagination.
My Wife and I both love to read. So, was the answer! I bought a for my wife (She now has 2) and I buy all the Hardbacks (Real old school)as the mood carries me. I found the missing editions of books that I was reading in the 60’s and when I Find a new author I can get all the back issues at great prices.
Not as good as ERB, and I probably should only give it a 3 rating, but I just enjoyed it too much. Call it a guilty pleasure. I liked it in spite of itself. I wish had a separate category for the genre of "planetary romance" or "sword and planet", as they are my favorite type of story. Even more than zombies. )
If you like this sort of thing (and I do) OAK is worth your time. I've read this and one of his Venus series and I've liked both. I'm still a little unclear as to how exactly they tie into each other, as in which Mars adventures take place after (or before?) which Venus adventures. The twist at the end of this book seemed a bit forced, but then so did some of Burroughs' endings. I found the "desert legs" especially cool, and wouldn't mind seeing the idea used in a movie some time.
I didn't find Kline as addictive as I did Burroughs. I couldn't put the John Carter books down until I had read the last page. Kline was a little more tedious. The book combines the female characters of ERB's Barsoom books with villains from his Moon Maid. He even uses the same bisyllabic, vaguely-Chinese names that Burroughs favored. Kline's Kamud is identical to ERB's Kazars. But Thorne is a lot more one-dimensional and less compelling than Carter; he doesn't go through any of the adjustments Carter did, such as learning the language, culture shock, or the comedic gravity adjustments. And the juvenile editing was annoying. The publisher obviously used a computer to spellcheck. There were several times when a word was spelled correctly, but was clearly the WRONG word, such as the "truck of a tree" (an actual example). For a paperback of this price, I would think they could have exercised much more care.
I'm a huge Edgar Rice Burroughs fan, and when I saw this title, I thought it was one I missed in my collection...well, thankfully I discovered this author. He's a contemporary and imitator of Burroughs, but I so love the genre I enjoyed this book also. It's similar to Burroughs' work, but quite different in tone and delivery. Still, fun stuff.
