Mark of Destiny is an epic novel that sucks you in from the start and takes you down a journey of exciting twists along the way. I found myself wanting to keep going even though it was like two in the morning! I loved Tizrah and Korlin, but the character I loved the most was Illadari. He was awesome! If you're in the market for a new epic fantasy author, Azrael James should be one you consider. For a debut epic fantasy novel, this one was amazing. Great debut novel in the style of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!
I read this early as an ARC and enjoyed it immensely, which has led me to immediately purchasing it once I saw that it was available. I plan on rereading it again. It truly is a pleasant book.
The story was well thought out and quite unique. The magic system is quite unique and I wish I had thought of something like it. It had many different phases and I enjoyed the twists and turns it took me down. The pace is good. The first third of the book was absolutely fantastic. I was willingly reading it over Furies of Calderon. That was followed up by a bit of traveling that I didn't love but traveling is a necessary evil and it's hard to make that super exciting. Beyond that, I loved every bit of the plot which tied well with the setting and the characters. The last third of the book was quite unpredictable. I had no idea where it would go but it was a satisfying end.
The characters were my favorite part of the book. Azrael did a great job with creating compelling characters that were easy to root for and/or against. There is a wide variety of personalities and as a result a good variance in relationships throughout the book (that are interesting and are fun to visualize). As mentioned above, the characters are utilized well with the plot.
Grammar was wonderful. Didn't encounter any errors. Azrael's style is unique and should keep the reader entertained. The prose is well done. It's just right.
Overall, I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 and with this being his first book I have absolutely no qualms about having to round up to 5. I'd recommend anyone that enjoys well-thought-out and varied magic to check this out. Now that I write this, I realize that Azrael has given himself an opportunity to expand even further with both the magic system and Belstrom in his next book.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Azrael has created a new and exciting take on magic that captivates the reader while providing a great foil for the story! I would recommend Mark of Destiny for any fan of fantasy! I look forward to the next book in the series!

I really loved this book! The characters were enjoyable and individual. I especially loved he priest, Illadari. There's a lot of visual description that's fascinating, but it doesn't slow the pace of this awesome story. I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
The story is good, the characters have depth and dimension and totally engage the reader. If you enjoy a novel/story along Tolkiens' vein, then give Azrael James book a read. I highly recommend and I will be reading the rest of this series.
Pluses I read it all through, wanting to know the outcome. Characters had a bit of depth. Interesting clash of two magic systems. No cliffhanger. Not too many typos or grammar errors. Minuses Just not that exciting. The story just felt shallow. I think the writer may improve with experience, or even as the series progresses.
